VERONA, Va. - The Staunton Augusta Waynesboro Animal Shelter officially opened its doors on November 1 in Verona, marking a new chapter for the organization that was previously known as the Shenandoah Valley Animal Services Center. The shelter has welcomed both staff and animals into its newly established space, creating a fresh environment for all involved.
Shelter Director John Gilbert shared that both the team and the animals have been settling in well. Additionally, the nonprofit group “Friends of Staunton Augusta-Waynesboro Animal Shelter” is playing an active role in supporting the shelter's operations and mission. This collaboration has helped ensure that the transition has been smooth and effective.
One volunteer highlighted how the upgraded facility has transformed the experience for the community. She noted that the new layout allows for a more positive and engaging visit for potential adopters.
“The cats are in their own separate pods, the dogs are in their own separate pod, and it is a much different experience to come here. The experience of being a potential adopter here is pleasant. You can see the dogs in a more natural environment,” said Sheri Laubach, Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors with the Friends of Staunton Augusta Waynesboro Animal Shelter.
The recent changes have had a positive impact on everyone associated with the shelter. Staff members reported that the save rate for animals this month has reached an impressive 95%. This high success rate reflects the efforts of the team and the improved conditions provided by the new facility.
As the end of the year approaches, Gilbert expressed hope that the shelter will continue to maintain this momentum. He emphasized the importance of ending the year on a positive note, which would be a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers.
“We are looking to end this year with some momentum,” he said.
For those interested in fostering a pet, the Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Animal Shelter encourages individuals to visit their official website.
