Local Authorities Investigate Animal Abuse Case Involving Abandoned Puppies
Sparta, Mo. – Two individuals are currently under investigation for their involvement in the abandonment of a litter of newborn puppies found in a dumpster last week. According to local authorities, Travis Callagy and Heather Lynn have been arrested on multiple charges related to animal abuse and neglect. The exact number of counts is still being finalized, but it is reported that they face nine counts of animal abuse and eight counts of animal neglect. At this time, no formal charges have been filed against them.
Following their arrest, law enforcement officials conducted a search of the couple's residence and removed two pit bull mixes from the property. This action was taken as part of the ongoing investigation into the treatment of animals under their care.
Discovery of the Abandoned Puppies
The incident came to light on November 19th when eight newborn puppies were discovered inside a dumpster at Roller Park. The puppies were found in a vulnerable condition, prompting immediate action from local animal welfare organizations. All eight puppies are now being cared for by Diamonds in the Ruff Rescue, a dedicated group focused on helping animals in need.
Morgan Vitale, an employee of Tokens and Friends Pet Services LLC, played a key role in transporting the puppies to Lebanon, where they could receive specialized care. Vitale highlighted the challenges involved in such a task, especially when dealing with very young animals.
“You have to have potty pads, you have to have different materials in order to accommodate for what they need because sometimes you could be transporting puppies as young as what I transported the other day, you may have to stop and bottle feed,” Vitale said.
In a social media post, Vitale expressed deep emotions about the experience, stating, “I have never felt more empowered and alive to be making a difference in the lives of these precious pups.”
Medical Care and Rescue Efforts
The puppies received initial medical attention at the Ozark Vet Clinic, where they were assessed and provided with necessary care. Additionally, the Animal Angels Network assisted in ensuring the puppies were safely transported to their new temporary home.
Currently, the puppies are in foster care, where they are receiving round-the-clock attention and care. Once they reach an appropriate age and health status, they will be available for adoption.
Ongoing Search for the Mother Dog
Authorities are also working to locate the puppies’ mother, who is described as a black dog with tan markings. It is believed that she may have been left near Lake Springfield. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the mother dog is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
