Imran Khan's Sisters Accuse Police of Brutal Assault During Protest
Amid growing concerns over the situation of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, his three sisters have come forward with allegations of a brutal assault by police. Noreen Khan, Aleema Khan, and Uzma Khan claim that they were violently attacked while demanding a meeting with their brother, who is currently imprisoned in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
The sisters and supporters of Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), gathered outside the jail this week to express their concerns about the former PM’s health and well-being. According to reports, police personnel allegedly "pounced on" them and carried out a "brutal assault." The PTI has called for an impartial investigation into the incident, emphasizing that the protesters had not engaged in any unlawful activities.
Details of the Alleged Assault
In a letter addressed to Punjab Police Chief Usman Anwar, the sisters described the events as "brutal and orchestrated." They stated that they were peacefully protesting, without blocking roads or obstructing public movement. However, they claimed that the streetlights in the area were suddenly turned off, plunging the scene into darkness before the assault began.
Noreen Niazi, one of the sisters, shared her harrowing experience. At the age of 71, she said she was seized by her hair, thrown to the ground, and dragged across the road, sustaining visible injuries. She also mentioned that other women present at the protest were slapped and dragged by the police.
The sisters further alleged that the police's actions were part of a broader pattern of indiscriminate force used against peaceful protesters over the past three years. They emphasized that such conduct contradicts the fundamental duties of law enforcement in a democratic society.
Demands for Justice
The sisters have demanded that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab immediately initiate proceedings against all police personnel involved in the alleged assault. They believe that the violence was not only criminal but also morally unacceptable and illegal.
Imran Khan has been in prison since August 2023, facing multiple cases. His sisters have not been allowed to meet him for over three weeks, despite their repeated requests. The government has reportedly imposed an undeclared ban on meetings, even as false reports of his death circulate on social media.
Conditions in Prison
According to the PTI, Imran Khan is being held in complete isolation and solitary confinement. A lawyer associated with his legal team has revealed that access to books, essential items, and his lawyers is being blocked. The lawyer criticized the situation, stating, “The law of the jungle prevails here, where only the beast who rules has rights. No one else has any rights.”
Even Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was denied the opportunity to meet Khan. He made seven consecutive attempts to see the former PM in jail but was repeatedly refused by jail authorities, whom Khan claims are controlled by an army officer.
